CONFERENCES ATTENDED BY CTHB/TPCP STUDENTS AND STAFF BETWEEN OCTOBER 2007 AND JANUARY 2008
Members of the CTHB and TPCP attended and presented papers or posters at conferences during the latter part of 2007 and
early 2008. These included the biannual meeting of the South African Society of Microbiology (SASM), the International Union of Forest Research Organisations
meeting (IUFRO), the first joint conference of the South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) and South African Society for Systematic Biology (SASSB).
The IUFRO conference entitled “Eucalypts and Diversity: balancing productivity and sustainability” took place from the 22nd to the 26th of October 2007 in Durban. It was the first time in 15 years that this conference had taken place in Africa. Delegates included students, researchers, academics and individuals from forest-related fields. Six Fabians also attended and presented at the meeting.
Between 14 and 18 January 2008 a joint conference of SAAB and SASSB took place at the Drakensville Resort, Northern Drakensberg, Natal. Topics included Biodiversity and Conservation, Animal and Plant Phylogenetics and Pollination Biology. The last day was set aside for talks specifically covering the Cape Biota. Attendees from FABI included MSc and PhD students, a post-doctoral fellow and two research project leaders – all members of the CTHB.
