Research Interests

1. Survey of Phytophthora Species in Disturbed and Indigenous Forests in South Africa

  • Identification of Phytophthora by means of morphology and molecular biology
  • Biodiversity of Phytophthora species in South Africa

 2. Phytophthora Diseases in Oregon and California, U.S.

  • Investigated differences in early phases of infection and chlamydospore development by Phytophthora ramorum on different hosts by means of scanning electron and fluorescent light microscopy
  • Developed new detection methods for Phytophthora ramorum using In situ PCR
  • Described colonization of Phytophthora ramorum in xylem and root of Tanoak
  • Responsible for the conception, design, and implementation of new methods for detection, enumeration, and histocytological research of Phytophthora lateralis
  • Developed histological methods for electron and light-fluorescent microscopy for detection and visualization of Phytophthora species

3. Monitoring and Research on Invasive and Exotic Species of Fungi in Korea

  • Surveyed and detected Armillaria species on pine forests and RFLP-based DNA analysis for their phylogenetic relationship
  • Demonstrated population genetics of Korean isolates of Fusarium circinatum
  • Discovered and identified unreported Phytophthora species including P. katsurae, P. nicotianae, and P. cinnamomi and their biology and ecology on woody plants
  • Examined susceptibility of different Quercus species to Raffaelea species
  • Diagnosed various diseases on woody plants for public services
