- Investigated differences in early phases of infection and chlamydospore development by Phytophthora ramorum on different hosts by means of scanning electron and fluorescent light microscopy
- Developed new detection methods for Phytophthora ramorum using In situ PCR
- Described colonization of Phytophthora ramorum in xylem and root of Tanoak
- Responsible for the conception, design, and implementation of new methods for detection, enumeration, and histocytological research of Phytophthora lateralis
- Developed histological methods for electron and light-fluorescent microscopy for detection and visualization of Phytophthora species
3. Monitoring and Research on Invasive and Exotic Species of Fungi in Korea
- Surveyed and detected Armillaria species on pine forests and RFLP-based DNA analysis for their phylogenetic relationship
- Demonstrated population genetics of Korean isolates of Fusarium circinatum
- Discovered and identified unreported Phytophthora species including P. katsurae, P. nicotianae, and P. cinnamomi and their biology and ecology on woody plants
- Examined susceptibility of different Quercus species to Raffaelea species
- Diagnosed various diseases on woody plants for public services
