I am currently busy with a project focusing on the interaction of maize plants with a fungal pathogen that causes grey leaf spot (GLS). This involves the identification of DNA and expression markers for quantitative resistance against GLS in maize. The occurrence of GLS is prominent in South Africa at present and appears to be increasing. As GLS can severely affect maize crop yield, marker-assisted selection of GLS resistant maize variants may become a valuable tool for obtaining resistant cultivars.
