Research Interests
Dear Reader
I have a passion for nature with a soft spot for fungi and plants. My main “claim to fame” is the taxonomy and systematics of the Cryphonectriaceae, a group of important forest pathogens
that I continue to study. I am, however, also interested in the taxonomy and systematics of other fungi. My main research focus points that I am working on now are fungal endophytes,
specifically their taxonomy, ecology, interaction with tree pathogens, how they can be used to infer fungal biodiversity, and how they can be applied for fungal conservation purposes. I am
also interested in fungal ecology, especially regarding trees and their diseases.
Another passion I have is to share my awe for the fungi with other people, especially about the more commonly known mushrooms. There is so much to tell and so much to do, and I hope to
promote the fungi under nature lovers as best I can. In addition to public presentations and popular publications on fungi, I have also started an e-mail list server, called Mycorrhiza
(click HERE), for people who would like to learn more about mushrooms and other fungi. It is called Mycorrhiza because,
just as mycorrhiza and their associate plants in nature, mycologists and amateur mycophiles in South Arica need each other to stimulate mycology and learn from each other. We have a related
website called www.safungi.org, where more information can be found, and where unknown and interesting fungi are posted.
I am also passionate to promote mycology on a more professional level, both in South Africa, the rest of Africa and other continents. This I can do in my capacity as President of the
African Mycological Association (AMA) that has an e-mail list server and website (www.africanmycology.org). I am also the editor of the
newsletter, called MycoAfrica, of the AMA.
Have a sunny day!
