Research Interests

My research focuses on the molecular genetics and genomics of wood formation in fast-growing trees such as Eucalyptus species and their hybrids. I am particularly interested in the molecular basis of quantitative variation in growth and wood properties and the development of biotechnology solutions to improve these properties in trees. My research programme has pioneered the application of genomics technologies, in particular transcriptome profiling by RNA sequencing, for population-based analysis of xylem development. Integration of such data with other sources of biological data such as wood chemistry traits and metabolite profiles allows a systems genetics approach towards understanding of the complex biology of wood development.    

I established the Forest Molecular Genetics (FMG) programme, a collaborative research and development venture of the University of Pretoria, Sappi and Mondi, in 2003. The programme has grown to include four academic staff (myself, Dr. Sanushka Naidoo, Dr. Eshchar Mizrachi and Dr. Steven Hussey), three postdoctoral fellows, 17 postgraduate students and 12 contract research support staff (see FMG Team). 

The Chair in Forest Genomics and Biotechnology was created in 2009 and is co-funded by Sappi, Mondi and UP. The research activities of the Chair is funded through the Forest Molecular Genetics Programme.

FABI shines at SASBi/SAGs conference

The Biennial joint SASBi/SAGS (South African Society for Bioinformatics/South African Genetics Society) Conference was held at Golden Gate National Park in the Free State Province from 16-18 October.
