The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) holds an annual Young Science Communicators competition that encourages young scientists to communicate their world to the public. The aim is to get young scientists to be creative in the way they communicate their science. This competition awards four categories, namely: popular article, audio clip, video clip and an open category (cartoons, poems, pictures, etc.).

FABI PhD candidate Darryl Herron entered a poster about “Food Security” for the open category. He wanted to make a poster that was easy to understand and highlighted the major problem we face as a world: feeding our growing populace by 2050. His entry was highly commended by the judges and received special mention on the SAASTA page.

First and second place for this category went to Ms Anisha Dayaram for “A statistical analysis of a scientist haplessly in love” and Mr Tlou Masehela for “As tiny as I am”.

All of the submissions were excellent and are good examples of science communication. All the entered pieces can be viewed here.
