I joined FABI in 2018 to pursue an honours degree with the department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology at University of Pretoria. My honours project focused on characterizing a sensory system in Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum

My MSc research focuses on the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex. A member in this complex, Fusarium circinatum is a major concern to pine growers in South Africa. My research looks to identify a pututative accessory chromosome in the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex. In fungi, accessory chromosomes can code for genes relevant to host-pathogen interactions. These chromosomes are of interest because the genes can include host-specific virulence factors and secondary metabolite synthesis gene clusters.
