The Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP) in FABI hosted a “Data Jamboree” on 7 February that saw 44 students in the research programme spend the day capturing historical data from the disease clinic. Much of this data has, since 1994, been recorded on paper but is now being digitized. FABI has partnered with the University of Pretoria ’s Department of Computer Science to make the analysis of the disease clinic part of their Masters Programme in Data Science. This will give the Institute access to some very sophisticated computer science input into the analysis and presentation of these data. A collaboration with the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research (ICFR) will also see geospatial distribution maps being produced for pests and diseases. These analyses will generate significant insight and powerful future tools for the disease clinic. As is the norm at FABI events a pizza lunch was served to thank the hard-working group for assisting with this mammoth task.
