Research Profiles

My Files

I am interested in the ecological and evolutionary genetics of fungal pathogens and insect pests of trees, and their biological control agents (including the development of biological control programs). I am also interested in the various levels of interactions between these fungi, insects, plants and humans. These interests are explored within a context of both invasive tree pathogens and pests, and native pests or pathogens expanding their host ranges to attack introduced trees of forestry and agricultural importance. My research covers and combines information from systematics, biogeography, invasion genetics, genomics and chemical ecology.

While I continue to work on many systems, I have focused extensively on the Botryosphaeriaceae as models of latent fungal pathogens and endophytes of trees. I have also done extensive work on the Sirex woodwasp, its fungal symbiont and its biological control programs.

See a recent newspaper article on our work on the UP ResearchMatters page, in the Mail and Guardian and The Converstation

My publications can be accessed via the various Research Profiles links on the left, or the reference lists below.

I tweet about research highlighhts, related science interests and other things that inspire me @bernardslippers

Apart from my direct research interest, I am also passionate about science development and the role of science in broader society. In this regard I have been involved in the global Young Academy movement, being a founding member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) in 2010 and the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) in 2011. I have served in the leadership of both these organizations and is a past co-chair of the GYA.

Below in the editorial and commentaries section you will find pieces I have written about science, science and scientist development, science leadership and research universities.

You can also see videos of me talking about some of the above topics at:
