Joint IUFRO meeting of IUFRO WP 7.03.13 and 7.03.16: Intersection of Behavioural / Chemical Ecology and Biological Control in Forest Ecosystems

@Future Africa, Pretoria, South Africa

28-30 October 2025

IUFRO is an international network of forest scientists working in a very broad range of research areas, including forest health and the management of invasive species.

This will be a joint meeting of two IUFRO working groups, and will focus on research related to the biological control, insect behaviour and chemical ecology of forest pests, and importantly the meeting will explore the interaction between these different disciplines.

Working group meetings are generally small enough to facilitate engagement with fellow researchers.

For more information about the meeting you can contact Jeremy Allison (Canadian Forest Service, jeremy.allison@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca) or Brett Hurley (FABI, University of Pretoria, brett.hurley@fabi.up.ac.za)

Keynote Speakers

Keynote speakers are being finalized - watch this space!

Programme

This meeting will be a combination of traditional power-point presentations and directed discussions, with an emphasis on the latter. Discussion sessions will have experts assigned to facilitate dialogue and rapporteurs to capture ideas in real time. Ideally the notes from these discussions will form the basis of follow up activities (e.g., synthesis papers, research proposals) with interested delegates.

The finalized programme will be uploaded at a later stage.

Venue and Accomodation

Venue:

The meeting will be held at Future Africa, on the Innovation Africa Campus of the University of Pretoria, in Pretoria, South Africa. This is a beautiful facility with a modern conference venue and multiple breakaway discussion rooms. The facility has specifically been designed to provide an environment for leading scientists and scholars from around the world to engage and address global challenges, and will thus be the ideal venue for this meeting.

Accommodation:

Rooms are available at Future Africa, the venue for the meeting. However, spaces are limited so please book soon.

Accommodation should be booked directly with Future Africa (accommodation@futureafrica.science ).

Information on the accommodation:

https://www.futureafrica.science/our-campus/guest-accommodation/

There are also a number of hotels and guesthouses in Pretoria. However, please be aware that none of them are in walking distance to Future Africa and thus delegates would need to arrange taxis/Uber for transport.

We will provide some accommodation options at a later stage.

Post-Meeting Field Trip

Depending on the interest, we may organize a one OR three day post-meeting field trip, which will be an additional cost.

A one-day trip would focus on plantation forest pest issues as well.

A two-day trip would focus on plantation forest pest issues and exposure to some of South Africa’s amazing native fauna and flora (e.g. visit to the Kruger National Park.)

Please indicate your interest in attending a post-meeting field trip on the registration form.
