Interns in the Phytosanitation and Biosecurity internship programme in FABI had the privilege to attend a two-day introductory phytosanitary course from 19-20 October. This course was presented Ms Marianna Theyse, who is a phytosanitary consultant for the Department of Plant Health, the Director of PhytoSolutions Consultancy and the General Manager of the Fresh Produce Importers Association. The purpose of the course was to build human capacity in the agriculture and forestry sectors, which is an important aspect of the internship programme. The course provided an overview of multi-stakeholder agreements relevant to sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS), as well as the Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) processes in South Africa. A follow-up course will be presented by Ms Theyse in November.
