FABI received the good news that Professor Mike Wingfield, has again been included on the Clarivate Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers (2021/2022), this for the fifth consecutive year.  This list, revised and published annually, recognises “scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through publication of multiple papers, highly cited by their peers, during the last decade”. Their highly cited publications rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science. Mike is one of two academics based at the University of Pretoria included on list; the other being the economist Prof. Rangan Gupta. They join seven academics at other South African universities  (three at the University of Cape Town, two at Stellenbosch University, and one each at the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand) to be included this year. Prof. Yves van de Peer and Prof. Pedro Crous, based at academic institutions elsewhere in the world, but having extra-ordinary appointments at UP were also recognized. In response to a question regarding this news, Mike said that he was happy with the acknowledgement, mostly because it reflects positively on FABI, the University of Pretoria as well as his many collaborators and students for their important contributions.  He added the caveat that “it is important to recognize that this is  only one of many different Science metrics and that these should never used in isolation when evaluating the complex domain of research excellence and impact”.
