The EU-funded MycoBiomics project is focused on using various -omics technologies to study fungi and discover new bioactive molecules. As part of the project, FABIans Holly Rosenberg and Kerryn Fourie visited the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (WI, Utrecht, the Netherlands) for three months. The purpose of the visit was to extract high-quality DNA for the genome sequencing of Penicillium strains classified in series Chrysogena and Viridicata. This forms part of important taxonomic revisions planned for these important groups of fungi. The project was overseen by Dr Jos Houbraken (Food and Indoor Mycology group) and Prof. Ronald de Vries (Fungal Physiology group). During their visit, Holly and Kerryn also attended the 11th International Commission on Food Mycology (ICFM) conference held at the institute from 7-9 July 2025.

We would like to thank our hosts at the WI for their warm welcome and the knowledge they imparted to us.
