Prof. Brenda Wingfield featured in a newly published book celebrating 20 Years of inspiring South African Women in Science 2025-09-04
South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. As part of the celebrations marking Women’s Month, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms. Nomalungelo Gina, launched the publication of a book celebrating "20 Years of inspiring South African Women in Science" and the remarkable women who have shaped the country's science, technology and innovation (STI) landscape.
The book shares the stories of 40 South African Women in Science Award (SAWiSA) winners, including that of FABIan, Prof. Brenda Wingfield. Brenda is Emeritus Professor in the University of Pretoria’s Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Microbiology (BGM). She is also holds the SARChI Chair in Fungal Genomics She was a runner-up in the Distinguished Woman in Science − Life Sciences Award in 2007 andwinner of the award in 2008.
