The 24th Advanced Phylogenetics Workshop took place at FABI from 7 - 11 November 2016. The workshop was presented under the leadership of Dr Martin Coetzee (CTHB / TPCP) with the assistance of Dr Jane Wright and Ms Marike du Plessis (CTHB / TPCP). The workshop was attended by Mandy Messal, Rachel Mkandawire, Vuyiswa Bushula, Daniel Ali and Wilma Nel from FABI.  Participants from outside FABI included Dr Sandra Denman, Andy Griffiths and Sarah Plummer from the UK Forest Research, Lucil Wendt from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI-MWIS) in Germany, Dr Wayne Howard and Rafaela Williams from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Hester Steyn from the South African Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and Donald Mukolwe from Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (UP).

The workshop provided attendees with hands-on experience in the different software that is currently used to infer phylogenies. The theory underlying the different phylogenetic methods was also discussed. The participants of the Advanced Phylogenetics Workshop are wished the very best for their future research.
