I am a student at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, currently pursuing my MSc degree in Biotechnology under the supervision of Professor Dave Berger and Dr. Marco De Canha. My research focuses on Greyia trees, which are endemic to South Africa and classified into three species. Greyia is known for its anti-tyrosinase activity and thus has potential for the treatment of hyperpigmentation. The main aim of my project is to correlate DNA barcodes with the medicinal properties of Greyia trees across their distribution range in South Africa. We plan to use DNA barcodes and a Greyia SNP assay to differentiate Greyia plants with varying medicinal properties in their leaves. Additionally, we plan to test whether different crosses between the three species can produce fertile seeds. This project's DNA barcode data, combined with measurements of anti-tyrosinase activity, will identify the genotypes in production orchards with the highest medicinal activity, aiding in the creation of an effective skin lotion against hyperpigmentation.
