I recently graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with an honours degree in Bachelor of Science in Agriculture specializing in Plant Pathology. My honours research focused on identifying viruses infecting passion fruit in an orchard in Limpopo Province, where I gained hands-on experience in molecular diagnostic techniques such as ELISA, RNA extraction, and RT-PCR. This work strengthened my interest in plant pathology, plant health, and the role of science in sustainable food production.
I am currently a phytosanitation and biosecurity intern at FABI, where I am expanding my skills in plant disease diagnostics, biosecurity, and disease assessment. My work aligns with the Centre of Excellence in Plant Health Biotechnology through the application of diagnostic tools to protect plants, while also supporting grain research initiatives by contributing to disease and pest diagnostic services for grain stakeholders. Through this integrated approach, I aim to support the health of South Africa’s indigenous trees, strengthen biosecurity systems, and contribute to national food security.
