My name is Thamia Laka, and I am from Mamelodi East in Pretoria. I hold a Master’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Mpumalanga, where my research focused on the influence of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi on the productivity and phytochemical content of Moringa oleifera under salinity stress. This work strengthened my understanding of soil–plant–microbe interactions, medicinal plant physiology, and crop responses to abiotic stress. My academic training included greenhouse experimental design, plant growth assessment, soil analysis (pH, EC, and organic matter), secondary metabolite analysis, and statistical data analysis using Statistix 10.0.

My technical skills include sample collection and preparation for biochemical analysis, phytochemical analysis (total soluble sugars, phenolics, and flavonoids), spectrophotometry and colorimetric assays, microscopy for assessing root colonization, and plant tissue extraction methods. I also have experience in sustainable crop management practices and basic laboratory techniques such as aseptic handling and sample preservation. My academic background aligns closely with the research focus at FABI in plant health and biological interactions, and this internship is providing valuable exposure to advanced research practices, collaborative scientific work, and practical techniques that are strengthening my development as a researcher.
