I am a PhD student in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria, co-supervised by Dr MacDonald Moloto from the Department of Agriculture. I am currently exploring the biosecurity implications of stored-product entomology for imported and exported agricultural commodities. My research examines biosecurity risks posed by key postharvest insect pests (quarantine and non-quarantine) affecting highly traded grain commodities in South Africa. The main component of the research involves analysing the occurrence, distribution, and trends of these pests across grain storage, handling, and trade systems, and assessing how these trends affect food security, trade integrity, and regulatory compliance, with the intention of evaluating the effectiveness of existing postharvest pest control and biosecurity framework measures in mitigating these risks within the Southern Africa grain value chain.
