An enthusiastic group of about 20 FABIans recently gathered in the FABI Auditorium to package more than 1.5 tons of maize seed for the National Maize Cultivar Evaluation Trials for the 2025/26 season. The seed, representing 59 cultivars, was prepared for planting at 79 locations across South Africa.

These trials aim to evaluate and identify promising maize cultivars that can either replace older varieties or introduce new ones with improved traits to the South African seed market. The data generated plays a critical role in supporting farmers, seed companies, and researchers by informing decisions that enhance the productivity and resilience of the country’s maize industry.

The initiative was once again conducted in partnership with Grain SA and the South African National Seed Organization (SANSOR), with funding provided by the Maize Trust. The seed-packing event was coordinated under the supervision of Prof. Cobus Visagie and Dr David Read.
