On 23 September 2026, FABIans celebrated Heritage Day with boerewors rolls, dancing and plenty of laughter. Staff and students arrived in colourful outfits reflecting the many cultures that make up our institute, with Springbok jerseys worn alongside beautiful traditional attire.

At FABI we know that diversity is what keeps a system strong, in soils, forests and crops, and our institute works the same way. Our community brings together many languages and cultures, with people from across South Africa, Africa and the world, all rooted in one place. Each person brings their own story, and together we grow something bigger: science that protects our trees and our crops.

The event was sponsored by the MUFASA project, led by Prof. Cobus Visagie. As a biodiversity project, MUFASA celebrates the natural heritage that sits alongside South Africa's cultural heritage.
