Dr Neriman Yilmaz recently participated in the 46th Mycotoxin Workshop, held from 25–28 May in Martina Franca, Italy. The event brought together 264 participants from 30 countries, representing universities, research institutions, and public and private organizations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Dr Yilmaz presented a talk titled: "Is Fumonisin less of a risk in the Eastern Cape? Investigating Fusarium diversity and mycotoxin prevalence in Eastern Cape South African Maize." The study is part of an ongoing survey funded by the Mycotoxin Trust through the Maize Trust and contributes to the MSc thesis of Kiara Munsamy, co-supervised by Dr Yilmaz and Prof. Cobus Visagie at FABI, University of Pretoria. Hannalien Meyer from the Southern African Grain Laboratories NPC (SAGL) is also involved in the project, contributing to the analysis of regulated mycotoxins.

This research represents the first long-term investigation focused on mycotoxins and mycotoxigenic fungi in the Eastern Cape region, with emerging mycotoxin analysis conducted in collaboration with Mytox-South, led by Dr Sarah De Saeger, and Patent.co, who carried out the regulated mycotoxin assessments.

The workshop offered an inspiring blend of cutting-edge science, international collaboration, and cultural exchange - a powerful reminder that addressing global mycotoxin challenges requires transdisciplinary teamwork.

Dr Yilmaz extends her sincere thanks to Dr Antonio Moretti (CNR-ISPA) and the Society for Mycotoxin Research for organizing such a valuable and impactful event.
