FABI was formally established as a stand-alone post-graduate research Institute at the University of Pretoria in 1998 and has thus reached the culmination of 28 years of research excellence.  On 26 Novembe, the Institute held its annual Year End Function, where more than 200 members of staff, students and their guests gathered to reflect on another year of growth, collaboration and community. The evening was thoughtfully and beautifully organised by the FABI Social Club.

Prof. Noëlani van den Berg, who oversees FABI’s social events, opened the formal programme of the evening by welcoming some of FABI’s  valued industry partners who joined us for the celebration. FABI Director Prof. Bernard Slippers shared an inspiring address on how uncertainty and fear often push people to grow into more courageous leaders, a message that resonated deeply with the audience and provided a meaningful close to the year. He also took the opportunity to  thank the FABI community for their commitment and support as well as the Social Club for their hard work, creativity and commitment in creating such a warm and memorable event to celebrate another year, filled with success across FABI’s many activities.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the 2025 FABI Awards presented by Prof. Irene Barnes, responsible for co-ordinating the awards nominations. The most prestigious honour to a FABI student, the FABIan of the Year, was awarded to Melandré van Lill, recognising not only her contributions throughout the year but also her consistent dedication and commitment to strengthening the FABI community. This award comes with an air-ticket to attend an international scientific congress. The celebrations continued as Taygen Fuchs received the award for Best MSc, while Lihan Esterhuizen was recognised for the Best Student Publication. Dr Tanay Bose stood out with two awards: Best Postdoctoral Publication and Best Research Fellow. The Best Postdoc award went to Dr Nam Pham. Excellence in mentorship was acknowledged through awards to Christiaan Grobler, Nicole van Vuuren, and Caitlyn English, and Aaron Harvey was honoured with the Getting the Message to the Public award. Recognition was also given to UP staff Noluthando Zikode and John Visagie for their invaluable support throughout the year. Creativity was also highlighted with awards for best photographs and art work. In these categories, Sandisiwe Jali received the award for best photograph of FABIans at Work and Rosa Knoppersen for her photograph illustrating FABI research.  The Creative Arts Award went to Kayla Thomas.

After the formalities and a delicious meal, guests enjoyed an evening of good conversation, laughter and dancing. A fitting end to a successful and inspiring year at FABI. The 2025 Year End Function once again highlighted the strength of our community and the people who continue to make FABI a place of innovation, support and shared purpose.
